5 Minute Career Advice ⏱️👨‍💼

This week’s 5 minute career advice is a short few tips on salary negotiation during a job interview.

Never name a number first

I think this tip is becoming less common as more and more states and regions are requiring that salary ranges be posted publicly. The thought process goes that if you throw out a number first, you might come in way too low from what the company had in mind. Eg: You say 70k but the recruiter had 90k budgeted.

I’ve personally gotten into very awkward phone calls because I refuse to name a number first. Use all your might and will to avoid it. Btw, here’s my all-time favorite blog post on salary negotiation for engineers.

Ask the range

If your counterpart is also skilled at the “never name a number first” strategy, you might get similarly dodgy answers when you ask about salary. If you can’t shake them, simply ask for a range or a “ballpark estimate”.

Don’t Be Afraid to Use Other Offers as Leverage

This should be obvious, but if you’re so lucky to have multiple job offers, use them as leverage! If you have a job offer that’s 10k below another, you don’t have to just blindly accept it. Be open and honest and let your recruiter or hiring manager know you have an offer at and what it is, including any perks or bonuses, etc. You never know, they might match or beat it.

Consider “Total Compensation”

Be sure to take a step back and truly consider the entire offer package or “total compensation”. Benefits, bonuses, equity, vacation time, work environment and culture are all part of the package. Salary negotiation isn’t always 100% about the money, so be sure to consider the whole package!

Know what you’re worth

The best way to negotiate is to truly know what someone with your skills and abilities is worth on the market. You can do this by checking Glassdoor, talking to colleagues and other professionals, browsing job boards that list salary ranges and just generally networking with others who will share that info. BTW, This is an IT Support Group ran a salary survey this year. There’s about 800 rows of data you can access here.

Hope you enjoyed! What are some of your tips for negotiating salary?
