Opinion: Does it matter if your manager isn’t technical?

Dear Anon:

I think this post probably makes a lot of people think about Jen from the IT Crowd. Clueless and misinformed, amateur at best and unable to perform the job functions.

The truth is, the post is missing a lot of context, so my answer is “it depends”. Companies come in a variety of sizes and organizational structures. If you’re at a tiny startup with few layers of management, your manager is probably not an IT person.

What are the manager’s roles? Is it to guide their employees, to manage workload and the flow of work? Or is their job to lead project work and implement it?

If it’s a more people-oriented role, their technical competence might not matter all that much. But if they’re supposed to be leading projects or if there lack of technical ability is getting in the way, that can be frustrating.

Read the room, how are others in the org reacting to the person and perceiving what they do?

It may be incredibly frustrating to work for someone who is not able to live up to their role.

If you’re in a bad spot at work: keep your head down, skill up and try to find a way out to a new job. Changing things in an organization can be incredibly difficult and futile. The best solution might be an exit. If you’re unable to find a new job, then work towards one, but slug it out and don’t cause drama.

This is all my opinion of course, you’ll meet a variety of managers during your career and might even join the dark side and become one.
